DOE slots $110m for biofuels research

The Department of Energy today announced $110 million in Recovery Act funding for advanced biofuels research.

The funding includes $50 million to create a research consortium to develop biofuels from algae, $35 million to create a research consortium to develop biofuels that are compatible with existing fuel infrastructure, and $25 million to increase funding for three existing Bioenergy Research Centers.

The research funding is part of a $786.5 million biofuels package that includes $480 million for pilot- and demonstration-scale integrated biorefineries. The refineries will produce fuels, chemicals and other products, and heat and power from biomass feedstock. The package also includes $176.5 million for existing biorefineries projects, and $20 million for research to optimize vehicles for ethanol.
